Is it reasonable to ask for a starting bonus in lieu of relocation assistance for a new job?
NewJober asked:
The position that I am applying for offers relocation assistance for new hires. However, as a local candidate, I won’t need to relocate. But dollars are dollars and it seems this is the only time to capture this benefit. (And it is real dollars saved by the company, when comparing me to other canidates.) Is it reasonable to ask for a cash starting bonus instead? Any specific recommendations on how to successfully field this proposal?

Probably not. Some companies will offer a signing bonus, however the relocation assistance is to attract qualified employees from outside the local area. It’s probably also a tax write off for the business. Paying you a signing bonus doesn’t achieve that and if they give it to you, they’d have to give it to everyone they hired.
You can always ask about it, but if you really want the job, don’t push the issue.
